Quick answer: For small parcels to Sweden, Canada Post with PostNord final delivery is usually cheapest; couriers deliver in 2 to 5 days for e-commerce and mid-sized parcels; ocean freight wins for pallets. Under CETA most Canadian-origin goods enter duty-free, but 25 percent Swedish VAT still applies, and 2026 EU parcel rules add a flat 3 euro interim duty per tariff line.

Reading time

Jet Worldwide has helped Canadian companies ship globally since 1988. Whether you are sending e-commerce parcels, commercial freight, or urgent courier shipments to Sweden, this guide gives you the insight to succeed in European markets and avoid unexpected border fees.

Canada to Sweden Shipping Costs and Transit Times

The cost to ship from Canada to Sweden depends on size, weight, and service level. Local post is best for personal packages; couriers are best for commercial shipments and heavier parcels. Contact our team for our lowest spot quote on shipments over 10 kilograms.

A Quick Comparison of Your Best Options

Mode Transit time Best for Sample cost
Courier (FedEx, UPS, DHL) 2 to 5 days Parcels and e-commerce from about CAD 170 for 5 kg
Canada Post 7 to 14 days Small personal packages from about CAD 40 for 2 kg surface
Air freight 5 to 10 days Commercial cargo 100 kg and up about CAD 5 to 7 per kg
Ocean freight 30 to 60 days Pallets and containers from about CAD 1,500 per 20 ft container

Correction noted: the courier sample was reconciled to the rate table used by the calculator below. An earlier version showed "about CAD 150 for up to 4.5 kg," which did not match the standard table starting at CAD 170 for 5 kg.

2026 Update: EU Customs for Parcel Imports

The European Union changed how customs authorities process low-value e-commerce and personal shipments in 2026. These changes directly affect Swedish consumers importing goods valued at 150 euro or less.

The flat 3 euro interim duty

From 1 July 2026 the EU removed the 150 euro duty-free de minimis, and a flat 3 euro customs duty applies per customs-declaration line, meaning per distinct tariff category (based on tariff sub-headings) in the parcel. It is an interim measure until 1 July 2028, when the EU Customs Data Hub launches and normal tariff rates apply.

Example calculation

  • The order: 1 silk blouse, 2 wool blouses, and 3 wool scarves.
  • The assessment: silk and wool blouses sit under different tariff sub-headings, and scarves have their own classification, so the declaration has three distinct lines.
  • The duty: 3 lines times 3 euro equals 9 euro interim customs duty, plus VAT and any handling fee.

The new handling fee

A separate EU-wide handling fee of about 2 euro is expected around November 2026, though the amount and date are still being finalized. In addition, item-level Product Identifier Data becomes mandatory on 1 November 2026, and generic descriptions are no longer acceptable.

Corrections noted: the earlier version described a "3 euro duty multiplier" without a date and a firm "2 euro handling fee from November 2026." The precise position: the 3 euro is a flat interim duty per declaration line from 1 July 2026, interim until 1 July 2028; the 2 euro handling fee is proposed for around November 2026 but not yet finalized. See our EU Product Identifier (PID) guide.

CETA Duty-Free Considerations

The Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) eliminates duties on most originating goods, but shippers must ensure their products strictly meet the CETA rules of origin, with a valid origin declaration, to claim preference. Swedish VAT of 25 percent still applies regardless of CETA status, calculated on the CIF value plus any duty. For consignments over 6,000 euro the exporter needs a REX number; below that, the invoice origin statement suffices. Benefit from Canada's free trade agreements.

Frequently Asked Questions: Shipping From Canada to Sweden

What is the cheapest way to ship from Canada to Sweden?

For small parcels, Canada Post, with PostNord handling final delivery, is often the cheapest route. Couriers offer the best value for mid-sized parcels up to about 100 kg. For heavier commercial shipments, economy air freight, or ocean freight for pallets, is the most cost-effective.

How long does shipping to Sweden take?

Postal options usually deliver within about 2 weeks. Courier express takes about 2 to 5 business days. Air freight usually delivers within about a week. Ocean freight takes about 30 to 60 days depending on routing.

What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is the greater of the actual scale weight or the dimensional weight. Dimensional weight is length times width times height in centimeters divided by 5000. Couriers typically round up to the next half kilogram.

What are the 2026 EU parcel-duty changes for Sweden?

From 1 July 2026 the EU removed the 150 euro duty-free de minimis, and a flat 3 euro interim customs duty applies per customs-declaration line, meaning per distinct tariff category, on consignments valued up to 150 euro, until the EU Customs Data Hub launches on 1 July 2028. A separate EU handling fee of about 2 euro is expected around November 2026, with the amount and date still to be confirmed.

Does CETA make my shipment to Sweden duty-free?

CETA eliminates duties on most originating Canadian goods, but the goods must meet the CETA rules of origin and carry a valid origin declaration. Swedish VAT of 25 percent still applies regardless of CETA status, calculated on the CIF value plus any duty.

Can I ship dry ice to Sweden from Canada?

Yes. Dry ice is a reliable solution for transporting temperature-sensitive goods to Sweden, such as biomedical samples, life-science materials, and frozen food. Per-package quantity limits apply and vary by carrier and aircraft. Contact our team for specialized cold-chain support.

Information gain, from Jet Worldwide lane data: across the Canada-to-Sweden parcels Jet handled in the last 12 months, about [JET-PROPRIETARY-PERCENT]% were billed on dimensional rather than actual weight, and the most common avoidable delay was an incomplete origin declaration on a CETA claim rather than the new parcel duty.
