The disadvantage of paying import fees on behalf of the receiver is that the bulk of the import fees are often from a value added tax that the importing business may otherwise be able to claim back.


Importing Goods to Costa Rica for parcels sent from Canada: Things to Consider

Goods shipped to Costa Rica must be accompanied by an invoice for customs or other supporting documents.

Costs Rican customs assesses duty on goods from Canada. The duty rate is based on the HS code of the item being imported and "CIF Value." The CIF value is the value of the item, plus transport and insurance cost.

In order to take advantage of the Canada - Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement, the Canadian parcel must be accompanied by a certificate of origin and other supporting documents.

Most goods with a declared value under $50 USD can be imported duty free. All goods sent from Canada to Costa Rica are subject to a standard tax rate of 13%.
