Shipping Guide For Sending to Canada

The declaration of a "gift" does not guarantee duty free status

Gifts under 45 Euro's are generally considered duty and tax free. Each item must be clearly listed on the customs declaration with the value. French customs can change the amount subject to duty and taxes if they feel the item(s) are under- declared.

Postal Delivery:

Many experts are predicting delays within the postal network due to the record number of parcels being imported to France during this holiday season. To ensure arrival by Christmas, we recommend sending your shipment as soon as possible.

Postal delivery is best for individuals sending small packages to family and friends in France and who are not concerned about delivery time.

Canada Pos is the best option for individuals shipping small parcels (under 10 kg) to France.

Delivery via Jet Worldwide

Our economy express parcel service guarantees delivery by Christmas for all shipments sent before December 18th. Most injuries we get are from shippers who are not satisfied with the postal service, require time definite transit and/or need a special service (such as delivery duty paid outlined below).

Some Gifts to France can clear without import fees:

A gift sent from an individual in Quebec to an individual in France that is valued below 45 Euros qualifies for importation without duty or VAT.

When individuals in Quebec send a gift to an individual in France, it is important to note “Unsolicited Gift” on the accompanying paperwork.

Additional notes on sending gifts:

Shipments consigned to companies as gifts for an individual may be denied entry as gifts. They will be subject to full duty and VAT.

Generally, most articles can be consigned as gifts, except those articles noted prohibited or restricted for import.

Ensuring the recipient of your gift is not charged duty or taxes

Despite all the precautions listed above, the only way to ensure the consignee is not charged duty or taxes is to send the shipment via Jet’s DTP service. Using our DTP (delivery to place duty free), any duty and taxes will be charged to you (the shipper).

It is important to note that French customs reserves the right to raise the customs value if it is (in their view) under-valued. Furthermore, some products are assigned a set minimum customs value irregardless of what is declared by the shipper. The ultimate determination of duty and VAT is made by French Customs Authorities.

The shipper can choose to pay the duty and taxes on behalf of person receiving your gift using Jet Worldwide’s Delivery Duty Paid Service. For information on sending with Jet, click here.
